U.A.E. Laws - Fundraising
In 2015, Decree No. 9 was issued by His Highness Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, prohibiting fundraising campaigns which had not been granted prior written approval from the Department of Islamic Affairs and Charitable activities.
This decree aimed to regulate the growing trend, at the time, where various non-registered and foreign charities started to directly promoting and collecting donations without any permit or license.
Penalties for violating these laws include: imprisonment for a period ranging from one month to one year, a fine of 5,000 up to 100,000 dirhams; or by both, depending on the court ruling.

What does this mean for me?
If you choose to work with a charity or non-profit organization, then DO NOT raise money in any way, shape or form! Unless of course, you have registered through the Department of Islamic Affairs and Charitable activities.
You will need to think outside the box - nothing new if you are an IB student!
Consider running drives to collect clothing, non-perishable food items, stationery, etc. as an alternative.
If you are unsure about your campaign ideas, feel free to speak to your supervisor, or me, for more clarification.
